Built on Juniper's enhanced ASICs for greater Layer 2 scale, it suits high-density GbE aggregation and Layer 2–centric Ethernet services at the network edge, with full-duplex operation, autonegotiation, and jumbo frames up to 9,192 bytes on every port.

Its 40 SFP cages are arranged in four rows of ten and accept 1000BASE-SX, LX, and LH fiber transceivers as well as 1000BASE-T copper SFPs, letting a single card mix fiber and copper hand-offs across a POP or aggregation row.
